Running a Successful Website.
There is a popular myth that just putting up a website is enough to bring in orders. Nothing could be further from the truth. Running a successful website is just as demanding as running a successful PR or advertising campaign - it takes ingenuity, planning, effort, time, and business acumen. Are you prepared for this? If so, read on. First of all, there is the website itself. The design must take into account the image of your business that you wish to project. This involves the choice of colours, graphics, layout and the nature of the content. See our Website Formats Guide for pointers. How are you going to create the site? Yourself, using FrontPage or another DIY software package? Look at our Website How To Guide for information. And the graphics? Where do you get them from? You can't just copy other people's work on the net or in magazines without risking a copyright infringement action. And finding free and royalty free graphics for commercial use is a long and frustrating experience. So you decide to take some digital photographs yourself. How about graphics optimisition? Re-sizing, colour enhancement etc.? Take a look at our Website Graphics Guide for an idea of the work involved. Finally, the content itself. This has to be written to appeal to potential customers and the Search Engines - if you want to be listed. Our Website Content Guide may be useful to you. Promotion, particularly, is an ongoing activity, and content must be updated, changed and added to regularly to maintain your position in the Search Engine lists.
